This week, members of the third class of the Agribusiness Leadership Academy (ALA) met in Oklahoma City for Session III. This session focused on advocacy and cooperative governance, two critical areas of competency for a leader within the industry. During the two-day session, participants had the opportunity to visit the Oklahoma Capitol where they met with Senator Casey Murdock, Chairman of the Agriculture and Wildlife Committee. Senator Murdock invited the class into the Senate Lounge and discussed the legislative session and his role in protecting Oklahoma agriculture. Members of Class III then talked to legislators from their respective districts, explaining the economic impact of their cooperatives and legislation important to agribusinesses. Day two began with a presentation on cooperative law from Brendon Atkinson of Atkinson Law Firm. Then, the class heard from two panels—one comprised of cooperative general managers and another of cooperative board chairmen. This portion of the session allowed participants to learn more about their potential future leadership roles within cooperatives from the industry's current leaders. Session IV of ALA will be held Aug. 11-12, 2020 in Oklahoma City. This session will take a deep dive into business management, specifically within agricultural cooperatives. For more information on ALA, visit www.okagcoop.org/agribusiness-leadership-academy. Developed and implemented in 2017 by Triangle Cooperative Service Company (TCSC) and the Oklahoma Agricultural Cooperative Council (OACC), the Agribusiness Leadership Academy (ALA) is a premier leadership program designed to train existing and emerging leaders in agribusiness management. The academy consists of four, multi-day sessions and one day-long session during which attendees present their capstone projects and attend a graduation banquet.
