Class III of the Agribusiness Leadership Academy (ALA) met in Enid, Oklahoma this week for Session II of the Academy. This session focused on cooperative accounting and finance. Participants also learned about the many facets of grain marketing. Accounting and finance are unique within cooperatives, making it crucial for future leaders of the industry to understand the fundamentals of each. Marty Shaffer of Campbell, Shaffer & Company, P.C. takes cooperative accounting back to the basics with a hands-on approach. “Cooperative accounting can be a challenge to grasp,” said Sarah Baca, Oklahoma Agricultural Cooperative Council’s (OACC) Director of Education and Recruitment. “This tactile approach truly helps individuals learn the ins and outs of accounting in a practical application.” During day two of the session, participants focused on cooperative finance. Jim Hommertzheim of CoBank and Steve Fenton of Cooperative Finance Association gave perspectives on cooperative lending to the class. Troy Presley of CoMark Equity Alliance rounded out the session with a presentation on grain marketing. The class also learned about the finance portion of their capstone projects from Dr. Phil Kenkel of Oklahoma State University’s Agricultural Economics department. Session III of the Academy takes place March 10-11, 2020 and will focus on governance, cooperative foundations, advocacy and cooperative law. The academy consists of four, multi-day sessions and one day-long session during which attendees present their capstone projects and attend a graduation banquet.
